Her body jerked involuntarily, her heart leaping into her throat like a trapped bird. A guard entered quietly, his footsteps careful and measured, and called out to Roshanay, asking her to follow him without offering any explanation.
The air in the room turned cold. Her mother did not look up. She never looked up anymore.
Roshanay was not expecting anyone at this hour, and a shiver ran down her spine. The hairs on her arms stood on end, as if her body already knew what her mind refused to accept. Yet, she assumed her uncle could be calling her, so with hesitant steps, she followed the guard through the dimly lit corridors. Her slippers whispered against the cold floor, each soft sound a betrayal of her movement. Her mind raced with questions, wondering what she had done to deserve this sudden summons.
“Where are you taking me?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly as she tried to mask her growing fear.
