Chapter 43. Promise You Won't Tell

We flag five taxis.
Each one slows, sees us… and drives right past.
Maybe it’s the busted lip on Eliza’s face.
Or the dried blood on my shirt.
Or the way we’re both limping like we just clawed our way out of a car wreck.
Which, technically, we did.
By the time the sixth one finally stops, Eliza throws up her hands. “About damn time.”
She winces when she moves too fast, grabbing at her side. Her shirt’s torn near the shoulder, and the bruise on her arm is starting to turn a nasty purple.
I open the back door, letting her slide in first. She grits her teeth with every motion.
I follow, trying not to make a sound.
But the second I sit—
Pain slashes through my ribs like a knife.

“Shit,” I breathe.
