Chapter 51. I'm Sorry for All of It
Rae:
The car smells like fresh leather, expensive cologne, and Eliza’s hair mist.
We’re in Kieran’s sleek black coupe. It hugs the road too tightly and purrs like a spoiled cat when Eliza revs it at the light.
“I hope we don’t get run over tonight,” she mutters, eyes flicking to a passing truck. “Would be a shame to die in Kieran’s car. He’d probably cry over the dent before the body.”
I snort. “That's what he gets for blowing up ours. May the ghost of our old, faithful Toyota haunt him forever.”
Eliza bursts out laughing. “That thing was a coffin on wheels. It smelled like old fries and expired air freshener.”
“It had personality,” I defend. “Like an ugly dog. Loyal, ugly dog.”
She grins, taps her phone. “I should let him know I’m not coming home early. Otherwise, he’ll think I was kidnapped again.”
The words hit. But not the way they used to.
Just dull now.
I look out the window. “Yeah. Wouldn’t want that.”
