The room is cold. Papers rustling. Low voices. Ceramic clinking gently on the table. Maps are everywhere. Monitors beeping. Phone calls replaying. We’re closing in on an insider. She doesn’t know we know.

“Boss, she is escaping.”
A message comes from the burner phone lying in the middle of the table. A feeder follows almost immediately.
Sabrina. Loyal cook.

On her door—struggling with the lock.
Bags heavy in one hand.
Suitcases already outside.
“She shouldn’t get far!” I demand, rising from my chair. I move to the ceiling-to-floor window and stare outside.
I’m lighting a cigar when Kieran walks in. Heads straight for me. Lowers his voice.
“The investigation you requested two months ago is done. The papers are in your office.”
My jaw clenches.
Subconsciously, I drop the cigar and crush it underfoot.
