The car slowed to a stop, tires crunching softly against gravel and dry leaves, and my body shifted forward with the gentle deceleration. When Ron cut the engine, the sudden quiet felt heavy, almost reverent, as though the forest itself was holding its breath. He stepped out first, moving around the car with practiced efficiency before opening my door. Cool air rushed in, carrying the scent of damp earth, smoke from old embers, and something faintly metallic—poverty, hardship, survival.
