Chapter 40
Marie’s POV
I'm good tonight. Really good, the kind of good that doesn't come around every set. The whole room's moving like one animal, hands up, everybody locked into the same pulse. The floor's packed, more than usual for a Tuesday. Somebody keeps requesting the same song over and over and I keep ignoring them.
Dean comes in around eleven. He's still got his work boots on. Must have come straight from the shop.
He doesn't look at the booth. Doesn't look at much of anything, actually — just heads straight for the bar, orders something dark, and sits there with his shoulders up around his ears.
I keep half an eye on him between mixes. Can't help it.
Around midnight, a woman sits down next to him. Dark hair, a red dress, a laugh loud enough to carry over the music. She orders something with a little umbrella in it. Dean doesn't order anything else the whole time she's there.
