A sharp pain in my rib area awakened me. Eliana was tossing, crying out “no” and somehow throwing her legs in her dreams.
“Please…” her voice was whisper-soft. “Scott…”
“I’m here, sweet.” I barely recognized my own voice. It was hoarse, weak—an inaudible whisper.
I tried to touch her face only for a sharp pull to stop me, followed by a pain that pricked my skin. Confused, I stared down at my hand. There was a needle lodged beneath my skin, taped securely in place, a clear line snaking up to the empty IV bag. I immediately pulled the damn thing off my hand.
Cupping her face in my hand, I noticed tears streaming down the sides of her eyes. “Eliana,” I called, gently shaking her awake.
