Chapter 17. In-Laws Issues

Lumina POV

The call came immediately as I was putting the groceries away. I almost didn’t answer when I saw the name on the screen: Silvia Blackwood.

My mother-in-law rarely called unless it was absolutely necessary, and when she did, it usually meant trouble. And in that case I was the one who was receiving it.

“Lumina.” Her voice was cold as she spoke as I answered the call.

”Come to the house. Now.”

“I’m sorry, but I’m busy with—”

“It wasn’t a request.” She said and ended the call as I pulled it away from my ears and I stared at my phone, feeling that familiar dread in my stomach.

In my previous life, calls like this had always always been followed by some new humiliation or anger thrown at me, new reminders of my actual place on the family tree.

But I wasn’t the same person anymore, and I wouldn’t let them intimidate me the way they once had.
