I barely slept that night, staring at the ceiling as Xenois’s accusations were replayed in my mind.

In my previous life, I had been cruel – I knew that. I had said terrible things, done terrible things to Riley, in anger, and his mother Sophia, when I saw how much Xenois doted on them. I was desperate and envious enough to reduce myself to that immature woman, because I thought I was protecting what I thought was mine.

But this time was different. This time, I had been nothing but polite to Sophia, even nice to her son.
