“Guess I was lucky enough to walk away from that mess,” Cassandra said casually, her tone light but her eyes sharp as she glanced at Vera and the man beside her. “The race had just ended when I noticed the brakes weren’t working. Got the car to stop somehow, and then boom—front passenger tire exploded. But hey, still in one piece.” She looked over at Alexander and tilted her head. “Grandpa, why are you suddenly bringing this up?”

Her bright eyes dimmed slightly, remembering Vera’s earlier attempt two months ago to get her out of the picture. Now it made sense why that man warned her yesterday—said Vera wasn’t as innocent as she looked.
