Chapter 23. Is My Stepdad My Man?

I woke up early the next morning, still sore from last night’s activities with Adrian. I took a quick shower, wincing as the hot water hit my bruised skin. I had to admit, the marks were a delicious reminder of our heated encounter.

I threw on a simple sundress and sandals before heading downstairs for breakfast. My mom was already in the kitchen, sipping her coffee and reading the morning paper. She looked up as I entered, a concerned expression crossing her face.

“Ava, are you feeling better today? You still look...tired.”

I forced a smile, hoping it looked more natural than it felt. “Yeah, Mom, I’m fine. I just didn’t sleep well last night. I’ll be okay.”

She nodded, seemingly satisfied with my response. “Well, make sure you eat something before heading off to school. I don’t want you fainting in class or anything.”

I rolled my eyes good-naturedly, grabbing a banana and shoving it in my purse. “I will, Mom. Don’t worry so much.”
