The photograph is still glowing on the console screen when Elias’s foot slams the brake so hard the SUV fishtails across both lanes, the tires screaming against the wet asphalt before the vehicle jolts to a stop halfway onto the shoulder.
Tyler’s hands shoot out to brace against the dashboard with a loud gasp. “What the heck was that?”
“Sorry,” Elias says. “Pothole.”
There was no pothole.
He stares at the phone screen for exactly three more seconds before he forces himself to lock it and drop it face-down onto the center console, because if he looks at that photograph for one more second he is going to turn this car around and drive it through the front wall of Carver’s building.
He pulls back onto the road, both hands on the wheel, and drives.
