​“Lucy! Lucy, wake up. Please, you have to open your eyes.”

My name sounds like it’s coming from the bottom of a swimming pool.

My brain registers it as background noise for what feels like a very long time before the cold floor beneath my cheek becomes impossible to ignore. I drag my eyes open and immediately regret it. The darkness in the room is not complete darkness, there is a single strip of weak yellowish light bleeding under the door across from me, and even that small amount of it makes my head throb like something hit it.
