Logan's POV

My heart sank, guilt washing over me. Of course she was. Maddie was always the loyal one, always by her side. Unlike me.

Layla looked up, her eyes thoughtful. 

“I’m really lucky to have her.”

I felt my chest tighten, a sick feeling settling in my gut. She was right. Maddie had been there for her when I wasn’t. She’d protected her, cared for her... loved her.

And I was the one who broke her heart.

I swallowed hard, forcing myself to ask, 

“So... what’s her name?”

Layla opened her mouth, but before she could answer, her phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen, groaning. 

“Ugh. She’s calling me again.”

I watched as she hit the ignore button, shaking her head. 

“She’s been blowing up my phone all day. I think she’s more excited about me dating than I am.”

I forced a laugh, even as my heart pounded in my chest.
