Chapter 7
“Under better circumstances, we ideally would have liked for you to meet Elijah and Cassie before today.” Rachel is saying as we all gather in the living room. She’s perched on the edge of the nearest armchair to the door, sitting up straight. I guess to look more professional. As if relaxing, even for a moment, might make us respect her less.
That’s not going to happen. Rachel has been kind of cool, considering the circumstances. Eli might have only been joking about the Tracy Beaker thing earlier, but that’s exactly how I imagined living in a care home to be. But Rachel made sure we were as comfortable as possible, and I appreciated that in my own way.
Not that I’ll ever admit it out loud. I’ve just cut my sarcastic remarks down to a minimum over the last few weeks.
She carries on speaking to Iris, and my mind wanders as I look over the surrounding room. My new home.
