Chapter 12
"You're thinking about it again, aren't you?"
My brother's voice pulls me from my thoughts, and I look up from the rocky pathway beneath my feet. The village itself has proper concrete pavement, which I found pleasantly surprising, considering the roads are one pothole away from being classified as a dirt track, and since the rest of the place looks like it's the land that time forgot. I mean, would it kill them just to have one pizza place in town? Or, for that matter, decent phone reception?
I give a startled look around and note that we're outside of Oakton's boundaries now, which explains why my footsteps had felt uncomfortable for the last couple of minutes. Uneven, rocky terrain, and flimsy, black ballet shoes are not a good mix. I glance down at Eli's feet, comfy in his Nike trainers, and unaffected by the change in the landscape. I can't help but glare, although he doesn't notice.
