But he was already moving, stumbling back down the hallway. I heard him calling for Ollie, heard our son’s confused response, heard Lake saying something about needing to leave, needing to go.

“Lake, wait!” I shouted, chasing after him. “Please, don’t leave. Let’s talk about this.”

But Lake was already in Ollie’s room, was already grabbing Mr. Hoppy and Ollie’s coat, was already lifting our confused son into his arms.

“Mama?” Ollie asked, his voice scared. “What’s wrong? Why are you crying?”

“We need to go, baby,” Lake said, his voice shaking. “We need to leave right now.”

“But where are we going?” Ollie asked. “Mama, I don’t understand. Is Papa coming?”

“No,” Lake said, and the word was like a knife to my chest. “No, Papa’s not coming. It’s just us now, Ollie. Just you and me.”
