They were asking him to choose between me and his brother, the only person he’s had by his side since the day he was born.

I backed away and saw in his eyes how his mind was reeling around the options, not who to choose but how to get the hell out of there. He looked at me and narrowed his eyes with a knowing gaze, Darian had the same one, and after that gaze usually came a sorely thought-out plan which often ended in a lot of bloodshed and dead bodies.

The Elder was watching Gabe, patiently waiting for his decision.

“The brother who would lay down his life in a heartbeat to protect you, or a girl you stumbled upon in the palace. She has no value to either of you and has only been part of a game that has brought so much pain to everyone involved. She will never forgive him, Gabriel, are you sure that you can watch your brother go through the pain of losing yet another girl?”

The grey around us looked colorful in comparison to what I saw in his eye
