Emmeline crossed her arms over her chest, narrowing her eyes at him before reluctantly moving toward the table.
“You called me a chicken,” she grumbled as she pulled out a chair and dropped into it. “And an omelette is an egg. Do you expect me to eat my own children?”
Zavian turned toward her, leaning his tall frame against the kitchen bar. One dark eyebrow rose in perfect arches over eyes that danced with barely contained amusement. The morning light cast half his face in shadow while illuminating the other half, emphasizing the sharp angles of his cheekbones and jaw.
“It wouldn’t be the first time you’ve eaten your kids, now would it?” His voice dropped to a suggestive purr.
Heat rushed to Emmeline’s face in an instant, spreading down her neck and across her chest in a visible wave of crimson. Her mouth opened and closed without producing sound, like a fish suddenly finding itself on dry land.
