Zaylien came down from the car, his bag hanging loosely over his shoulder, and walked straight inside the mansion. The familiar scent of freshly cooked food drifted through the hallway, and his stomach rumbled despite the fact that he had eaten earlier at Aunt Selene’s house. He followed the aroma instinctively, his footsteps light as he made his way to the dining room.

As he entered, he wasn’t surprised to find his parents already seated. The long dining table was neatly set, as his Papa, Lucien, sat with his straight posture, his expression calm but unreadable. His Dad, Zayn, wore a softer smile.

“Good evening, Papa. Good evening, Dad,” Zaylien greeted, leaning down to kiss both of them before pulling out a chair.

“How was your first day of school, special?” Zayn asked, his tone gentle, his eyes full of interest.

Zaylien shrugged lightly, sliding into his chair. “It went well, I guess.”
