Chapter 44. Cold Walls
Zayn put his hands inside his pockets as he stared at Lucien, who had his head down.
Lucien couldn’t look at him. His fingers twisted together nervously, nails biting into his skin.
Zayn sighed. The sound was low, heavy. He took a step closer, his boots making a soft thud on the floor.
Lucien’s shoulders tensed instantly.
“You had a nightmare?” Zayn asked quietly.
Lucien nodded once. He didn’t dare speak.
Zayn moved closer until he stood right in front of him. He crouched down a little so he could see Lucien’s face, but the boy still kept his gaze on the floor.
“What was it about?” Zayn pressed, his voice not unkind but carrying that firm edge he always had.
Lucien shook his head. “It’s… nothing.” His voice was barely above a whisper.
“It’s not nothing,” Zayn said, sharper this time. “You’re shaking, Lucien.”
Lucien flinched. His lips trembled. “I don’t… want to talk about it.”
“Why?” Zayn asked.
