“Then why the sudden look of anxiety?” he prompted.
“You told me to hold the thought,” she wryly pointed out.
“That belonged to a different thought,” he returned. “I am now discussing the one that denies me your eyes.”
Lifting her lashes, she looked directly into his eyes and smiled a wry smile at his even needing to ask that question. “I haven't known you for a very long time. You're my boss, and you wonder why I am anxious about this?”
“Would a few more days make any difference?”
He put the question to her with genuine interest, she was sure, but it was mocking all the same, because he knew just as she knew that this had been written on the wall from the first second of their first glance at each other.
