Chapter 82. Largest Slice

"Mummy! It is smelling burn-burn!" Emma rushed to the kitchen, where Marissa was frying plantains.

She was startled and dropped the plate in her hand. She looked around in confusion. "Ehn? What is that? Emma! I have told you to stop rushing to the kitchen like, Yeh!" She shouted as she realized how burned the plantains had become. She quickly switched off the gas range and removed the frying pan from the fire.

Oh my God! What have I done?" She bemoaned the wasted plantains as she tried to check if any could be salvaged. She picked them one after the other and dipped into each with the fork in her hand to see if the inside was still okay so she could just scrape off the burned part. No such luck, though. Every single piece was totally burned. She threw the fork onto the counter in exasperation.

Emma, who had been looking at her hand movements since he couldn't see the top of the range very well, looked at her face and asked, "Mummy, is it burned very badly?"
