Chapter 171. Save the Children
Esmeray stared into her black hazy eyes that were regarding Esmeray as if they sought help. The air around them grew heavy, thick with the scent of burning sage and old stone, as if the castle itself was holding its breath.
All of a sudden the shadows dancing around the woman engulfed Esmeray like a sand storm. The chill of it scraped against her skin like shards of glass, her hair whipping across her face as the wind howled in her ears. She cried out in pain, her spine arched like a bow as her surroundings blended out with visions of countless nameless faces. It was like someone was playing clips from numerous unknown movies in front of her eyes. Each face flickered with anguish and despair, their silent cries echoing deep inside her skull.
Esmeray blinked rapidly to shake off the visions. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears, and a metallic taste of fear lingered on her tongue.
Was she daydreaming or hallucinating?
