After discussing this with everyone, they exit the study, leaving me with my mate. We are both silent. I’m standing against the window, watching the forest.

I feel his body heat radiate into me. It is welcome, as I’m cold. How did he manage it?

He pulls me against his front and kisses the back of my head. I open my mouth to apologize again for going behind his back, but his words ring in my mind, ‘you’re always sorry and making promises you don’t keep. I don’t think those words mean anything to you anymore,’

“I love you, Nicholas. And if I must break my promises and apologize to keep you safe, I will,”

He stiffens momentarily and then relaxes, leaning in to kiss my neck. Why isn’t he saying anything? “You can punish me for what I did,” I suggest.
