What was I thinking, being close to another man like that? Maximus still seems disoriented and confused about what happened. He follows my gaze to see Nicholas standing a few feet from us, watching us with a crestfallen expression.

“Nicholas,” I breathe, going past Maximus to my mate. “What are you doing here?”

“What are you doing here? And with him,” his voice is low and dangerous. His eyes are fixed on the man behind me. Maximus is looking at us, distraught. Why does he look like that?

“Stay here,” he growls, and goes to Maximus.
