“Wait.” Alice’s voice, soft now, stopped me in my tracks. The single word carried more urgency than anything she had said before. I froze, hand on the doorframe.
“Did I see it right?” she whispered, eyes wide as she leaned forward. Confusion tangled with fear in her voice. My pulse skipped. Did she see…? Before I could answer, she darted out of the room as if something urgent had caught her attention.
I stood alone for a moment, listening to the distant echoes of her footsteps. Every face in this stronghold was strange; I had learned that much in my short time here. What had she glimpsed on me that startled her so?
