Eliza found Liã sitting quietly in an armchair, drinking cognac, and Serena sitting quietly on the bed in Dom João's room.

She looked around, but only Mentor remained there. Louise had disappeared.

"Mother! How could you let Papa go with that creature?"

"Eliza, I could never stop my father from doing whatever he wanted, why do you think he would listen to me if I asked him to stay?"

"You could have imposed on the creature that presented itself as a beast that he would only accompany you if Mentor and I could go together."

"And you really think the beast wanted that? And that your father would prefer my advice to that of a god? Eliza! Pull yourself together and start thinking logically."

Eliza realized that her mother was right and approached the table, poured herself a brandy and sat down next to Liã, while Mentor remained standing.

"You look just as I knew you." Liã observed with a sat
