Chapter 69. Breakfast
The next day, as soon as Don João came down to breakfast with his wife, the table was already full. His daughter was at the head of the table, appearing indifferent to all the talk that was going on next to her. The Pharaoh was smiling with his concubines and Matheus and Alfred seemed to be enjoying themselves with them as well.
He arrived and sat down in the only empty seat, leaving his wife standing. Soon, Alfred came and brought her an extra chair so that she could sit down too, but not before Moses realized his father-in-law's inelegant attitude. But he said nothing.
"I think what we had to talk about will be left for another time." Don João said, raising his voice to be heard. "We can't talk in an environment like this. I don't know what you call this decay of prosperity and smooth running of your reign. You can't even control your own concubines to have manners in front of a guest..."
