“Alpha.” I looked up, meeting Merina’s gaze. Her eyes were soft and warm, a look I recognized from the past—the way Kate used to look at me when I was still mated to Stella. Was Merina after the same thing?

“Are you going to just stare, or will you speak?” I prompted. She blinked, breaking eye contact before returning her gaze to me.

“I feel that Luna Heather is acting strangely,” she whispered, her eyes dropping to the floor.

“What makes you say that?” I asked, trying to keep my tone neutral.

“Alpha, the maid Clara mentioned seeing Luna talking to an odd-looking bird—a raven with red eyes. It often visits her window. After these encounters, Luna seems troubled and anxious,” Merina explained.

“Clara isn’t well; she’s had some mental issues. Perhaps she was just having a bad dream,” I dismissed the concern. “Even if Heather has a pet raven, what does that matter?”
