“Please? Just listen to me first?” Zac’s voice was soft as he gently cupped my cheek, his touch warm yet trembling. His eyes… they looked different now. Like a child pleading—desperate, vulnerable. And I couldn’t tell if it was just the reflection of the hallway lights making them glisten or if tears had already begun to pool in them.
My own tears slipped down my cheek, and he instinctively reached up, wiping them away with his thumb.
As his fingers brushed against my skin, our eyes met, locking in an intense, unspoken exchange. There was something in his gaze—something raw, something unguarded. He looked like he wanted to say something, something he was struggling to put into words. And in that moment, I faltered. The resistance in my body weakened.
