Chapter 37

Vanessa was playing with the baby on the playroom floor when a housemaid entered and said, “Mrs. Payne, your husband is here.”

“Ask him to come up, please.”

Anthony came upstairs and opened the door to the playroom. Vanessa was sitting on the floor, supporting the back of the five-month-old boy. Vanessa sat him up, and he toppled over, resulting in laughter between them.

Anthony entered and stood in the doorway. Vanessa spoke before he could come in:

“Please, take off your shoes here, leave them outside.”

Anthony complied.

“Tell me what you came here to do.”

“I came to see my son.”

“Okay.”

Vanessa kissed the boy’s forehead, got up, and walked towards the door.

“Aren’t you going to stay?”

“No, you came to see your son. Stay with him. When you’re leaving, ask the nanny to let me know.”

A woman in a white uniform entered the room.

“Katherine, this is my husband. He’ll be with the baby for as long as he wants.
