Chapter 116
Drake’s POV
I was driving too fast.
I knew it, but I didn’t slow down.
The morning had already been tense before I even got into the car. Something felt off. Chloe had been distant the night before, focused in a way that made me uneasy. I had tried not to question her too much, but the feeling lingered in my chest like a warning I couldn’t interpret.
Traffic was light on the highway, which only made it easier to press harder on the accelerator. My mind wasn’t fully on the road. It kept circling back to the interrogation scheduled for that morning. I should have been there already. I should have sat in that room to ensure they didn’t corner her unfairly.
But part of me had wanted distance. If I showed too much protection, the board would question my judgment. Margaret would use it against me.
My phone buzzed against the console.
I ignored it at first.
Then it buzzed again.
I glanced down briefly.
