Chapter 56
Maya's POV
Lina and I stood staring at each others faces as I pressed the phone to my ear, unsure what to make of Maria's voice. She sobbed so much that it was hard to hear what she said over the phone.
I steadied my shaking hand against my jeans.
"Maria, Maria, you have to calm down," even though I, too, wasn't calm one bit, "where are you at so I can send someone to get you?"
"NO!" she interjected immediately over the phone. Hearing her pure fear, I had to wince, "Not Damon or anybody. If you can send George,"
I looked at Lina, and she shook her head, "George's not home since he went."
My fear intensified. "Maria, we have no choice; we must send one of Damon's men to get you. We have to."
I could feel her shake her head even from the phone, her desperation to be home waning: "No, Maya, I'd rather walk all the way home than for Damon to find out about this."
