Chapter 56

We're running full tilt when I hear them behind us, boots pounding on concrete. I push harder, my bare feet screaming against the rough floor. Then comes the distinct crack of gunfire. Rafael moves like lightning, yanking me behind a concrete pillar. Every impact against the concrete sends vibrations through my body, dust, and chips flying with each hit. My heart's trying to break through my ribs. How are we going to get out of here?

"I have to give it to you, son." The voice comes from behind us, smooth as silk and twice as deadly. "Your fuck coming to save you wasn't something I could have expected."

I turn just in time to see Rafael's father pressing a gun to the back of his head.

"Don't fucking talk about her like that!" Rafael explodes, whirling around with such fury that the movement itself seems to crackle with electricity. His fist connects with his father's face with a sickening crunch.
