“So, Mr. Knight,” Hazel said, leaning forward with a conspiratorial gleam in her eye. “Do you like Madison? As more than an employee, I mean.”
I wanted to slide under the table. Or maybe just disappear entirely.
“Madison is a great personal assistant,” he replied smoothly. “And now a promising project manager. I appreciate her professional contributions to Knight Industries.”
“That’s not what I asked,” Hazel pressed, undeterred.
“Hazel!” I hissed, kicking her under the table.
“What?” She gave me an innocent look. “I’m just making conversation.”
Alexander’s lips curved into that infuriating half-smile. “I value Madison greatly as my assistant. She anticipates my needs before I even realize I have them.”
The double entendre wasn’t lost on any of us. Hazel’s eyebrows shot up, and I felt my face flame.
