I woke the next morning with renewed determination. Or maybe it was just stubbornness. Either way, I was going back to Connecticut. But first, I needed coffee and probably some form of intervention from someone who knew me well enough to tell me I was being an idiot.
That someone was Anthony Williams.
I texted him at seven.
Me: Breakfast. The usual place. Eight o’clock.
His response came immediately.
Anthony: Someone died?
Me: Just meet me there.
Anthony: This better be good. I had plans to sleep until nine like a civilized human being.
I arrived at the café first, claiming our usual corner table. The place was a hole-in-the-wall spot near the hospital where Anthony worked, serving passable coffee and excellent bacon.
