Chapter 218
The monitors blared as nurses rushed forward.
“Call Dr. Minhaas. He’s bleeding!” one nurse yelled.
“Get gauzes, quick!” another shouted.
“No… no! Murat, stay with me!” Ayleen cried, holding onto his hand. But the nurses pulled her away.
“You are the heart of Murat Khan, never forget that,” Murat whispered hoarsely. His breath grew shallower as his hand fell limply onto the bed.
“No!” Ayleen screamed. The heart monitor gave a long, continuous beep. A straight line flashed across the screen.
The world blurred. She couldn’t hear anything, only that dreadful sound.
Dr. Minhaas rushed in. “Clear!” he ordered, pressing the defibrillator to Murat’s chest.
His body jerked once.
Twice.
But Ayleen couldn’t watch as the nurse closed the door on her face. Ibrahim Khan caught her as her legs gave out. She collapsed onto a cold steel bench. Everything felt distant. Muffled.
“Murat…” she whispered, staring at the closed doors.
