The soft clinking of silverware and hushed murmurs of conversation filled the restaurant. It was quiet, elegant, the kind of place you’d never imagine walking into without a reservation or three weeks of planning.
And yet, here I was.
Sitting across from Damon Lockwood.
At a candlelit table. In a private corner. With a waiter who looked like he cost more than my entire wardrobe.
A place where I knew that I most likely did not belong, judging by my rank and everything that I’ve learned to live with.
It should have been uncomfortable.
But strangely… it wasn’t.
Maybe it was because I was with him that I felt like I belonged somehow, that the two of us could actually sit in a restaurant like this.
