“You’re late,” she said coldly, her voice cutting through the silence. “Do you realize how easy it would have been for them to catch the fact of you being gone?”

“Well, it is good that you were here covering, right?” I asked, my tone dripping with a sarcasm that would have made her squirm on normal occasions, but I knew that she, like everyone else, believed herself to be of a higher rank.
