“You've been here for hours, Liam. You need to go back and rest.” Alaria said from beside the window.

“Kai hasn’t checked in,” I muttered, pacing across the study as I gripped my phone tighter. I’d called him four times now, each time straight to voicemail. That wasn’t Kai. He never ignored a call. Not mine. “If there was anything that I needed to know, I would have been told. He would have called, he would have informed me, but nothing.”

Alaria stood near the window, her arms wrapped around herself as she studied me carefully. “Maybe he’s just… caught up? You know how he is. He might be fine. He has a lot to take care of. You know how things can be difficult on him as a beta.”

I shook my head, jaw tight. “No. Not this time. My gut’s screaming otherwise. He should have been back hours ago, and he always lets me know where he is. I know that something's going on and that he needs me, I just don't know what it is.”
