Selena’s POV
Cleo steps forward with a sound I feel in my molars.
“You are trespassing.” She deadpans, her tone void of emotion, as she won’t give the lirael anything.
The lirael laughs and the river laughs with her.
“All water is mine, Luna. And anything that looks at me belongs to me for as long as I am beautiful.”
“You’ll have a long wait then,” I say dryly. “We’re terrible at belonging.”
Her gaze flicks to me and a thousand little hooks press against my skin.
“You’re the one who died and didn’t,” she murmurs, curious. “Selene’s pet. How precious.”
My fingers curl around the sunburst at my throat. It warms, then cools, as if a hand pressed against a window and then pulled away.
“She’s busy. You can leave your message with us.”
“Oh, I’m not here to message.” She smiles, and it’s the kind that makes men take stupid steps. Two do, on Shadow pack’s bank, and Cleo’s voice cracks across the water like a whip. They snap
