Cassian POV
The room was too still. Too quiet, except for the soft rise and fall of Elvira’s breathing.
I stood in the corner, arms folded, watching over her the way I had been for hours. Maybe longer. Time had lost meaning since that night. Since the moment she woke from breaking the curse, stared right through Jaxon… and turned to me.
Even now, I could feel the weight of that look. The way her eyes had softened — the first sign of trust she’d shown anyone since she opened them again had been for me.
And I hated it. I hated that it meant something.
I should’ve gone. Should’ve left her side like I said I would. But I couldn’t. My feet wouldn’t move. My heart wouldn’t let me.
So I stayed, and watched.
She slept fitfully,
