Chapter 128
Maeve’s POV
I wove through the crowd with Dorian’s hand still gripping my wrist.
“What happened back there?” he asked, his green eyes fixed on me.
I shook my head. “Nothing.” That was all I could manage. I didn’t understand what had just occurred. All I could feel was a tremor coursing through me and a tight, suffocating fear in my chest. Then I slipped off my mask.
“Hey, Maeve—take a deep breath,” Dorian said, pulling me to a halt. He could practically hear my heart hammering against my ribcage.
“I will,” I replied, though my voice trembled. “But first, I have to find Seraphine.” I tore away from him and hurried toward the tall golden doors that led outside into the cold, dark night. Seraphine and Marcello were nowhere in sight.
I clenched the skirts of my heavy gown in one hand, hitching them up just enough to move more swiftly. I was about to head for the witches’ quarters when I sensed Draven’s presence behind me.
