Maeve’s POV
Why did she have that? Why did the women in my dreams have that?
“Maeve?” Warm, soothing hands settled on my shoulder. I looked up to see Seraphine standing beside me, her wide eyes filled with concern. “Are you all right?” she asked.
I nodded, though I was anything but okay. My heart pounded so fiercely I couldn’t slow it down. Even though Seraphine was right in front of me, it felt as if I’d been transported back into the violence and death of my dream. My breath hitched; I pressed a hand to my throat and choked on each gasping inhalation.
Seraphine’s panic flared beside me. She slid her hand from my shoulder to my cheek and gripped me gently, forcing me to hold her gaze. “Breathe, Maeve,” she murmured. Her voice sounded ordinary, but I could feel the magic threading through each syllable. Gradually, my breathing steadied, my pulse slowed, and the room snapped back into reality.
