"If you want to look, just do it openly," Emerald teased.
"Who's looking at you, narcissist!" Jamilah snapped before scurrying off in a panic.
She ran straight to Alaric, her face full of urgency. "Dad, are you really married to that woman?"
Alaric took a sip of tea before setting down his cup, his expression serious. "Jam, don't be rude. If you don't want to call her 'Mom,' at least call her 'Aunt.' She's the woman I chose. Even if you don't like her, I expect you to respect her."
Jamilah crossed her arms, letting out a dramatic sigh. "Who said I don't like her? She's a little annoying, sure… but I guess she's pretty enough. Barely worthy of you."
Alaric chuckled at her stubborn, prideful little face. Maybe, just maybe, Emerald's arrival would be the change this child needed.
"Then… can my aunt and I stay here tonight?" Jamilah
