Chapter 91
“Should I decline the invitation and send a gift?”
“Yes, but Nick also has to send a personal note explaining that he’ll be out of the country. And—” I add, remembering a detail, “there’s one more thing.” I’m standing behind her desk so we can both see the monitor on my—well, today it’s her—computer. I lean over to reach the mouse and open the folder we keep on Senator Robertson. After a moment I straighten with a triumphant smile and point to the screen. “Look.”
Rachel skims the article I filed in the folder: a brief Washington Post piece about the senator’s wife and her work with a rescued–greyhound adoption program.
“Ask Nick, of course, but I’m sure he’ll support that cause.”
“Shall I send a note to the senator along with a donation to his wife’s cause?”
“See how good this job already is for you?”
She makes a face.
“I’ve been rescheduling meetings and taking care of Dallas all morning.”
“Sykes? Or the city?” Worry rattles me.
