I hesitate on the sidewalk in front of Gemini Rising, one of the many trendy bars that open and close regularly in Santa Monica. It’s owned by twins, and Cass, who dated one of them almost a decade ago, assures me that the atmosphere is great—conversation is possible, and both the food and drinks are almost orgasmic. Of course, she has chosen it for that reason.
The fact is, although I was excited to go out with my best friend and my brother, I’m not sure I’m in the mood to chat. I’m too busy pretending my whole world isn’t on the brink of complete and utter disaster.
