I was right. It didn’t only take half an hour. It took longer.
The debris turned out to be huge rocks and heavy landfill. Also, because of the rain, the landfill solidified and got heavier to be carried by mere shovels.
“I apologize for the delay, sir, but we already requested a backhoe. It’s going to be here shortly. I’m sorry, but you have to wait.”
Ashlene was beside me, and upon hearing it, she covered her mouth.
“For how long?” I asked because Ashlene seemed to be speechless… again.
“For almost two hours. I guess. That’s the maximum. We’ll do our best to finish it as soon as we can.”
That didn’t sound like an assurance. I felt Ashlene’s mood deteriorate as she held me on my right arm.
“I can’t go home tomorrow. It has to be tonight,” she said when the man finally turned his back and ran back to the fill.
The man was hosed all over. All of the men who volunteered to help were wet from head to foot. Ashlene cannot stand
