Chapter 15
“Kayla,” I heard as I was getting in.
The living room was dark, but I could still see his bold silhouette on the couch. I was grateful for the dark; that meant he couldn’t see my tear-stained face.
“Sir?” I answered in a voice I hoped wasn’t scratchy. I had cried in the cab on my way here. I didn’t want him to realize that and start asking questions.
I didn’t get the chance to hide, though. A few seconds after I answered him, he turned on the lights. I squinted, but I couldn’t hide. He had already seen me. I turned my face away slightly. But I knew it was futile. He had probably already seen my puffy (and most likely red) eyes and my tear-stained cheeks.
There was a little silence as I waited for him to speak. He had never been shy in speaking his mind, and I knew he wouldn’t bother keeping quiet this time either.
Surprisingly enough, his voice was soft when he asked, “Do you want to talk about it?”
I sighed and turned away. My first instinct was
